i have been having a problem with my motor stalling since i bought it new in 05. it's a johnson carb 150. the dealer i bought it from could not fix it, another dealer i brought it to could not fix it, and the last dealer i brought it to couldnt get to the bottom of it either. unfortunately, the dealer i bought it from never called in or made a warrantee claim, so every attempt to correct it now is out of pocket and it seems like im wasting more money every year and i'm still having the same problem. the last dealer i brought it to told me it was a fuel problem and i needed a new micron filter ($210) to further filter the gas. i had them put it in, took it to the lake, and my motor would start, an alarm would sound, and it would shut itself down. i called to see what was happening and because it was saturday, i was told i was out of luck until monday. i had a tourney on sunday so i un-hooked the new filter to get myself through. when i brought the boat back in on monday, i was told i needed a new fuel pump because the pump i had was not strong enough to pump through this new filter (this would of been nice to know before i had the filter put in). so, $640 later, i take the boat to the lake and sure enough, still stalls. their answer to this was for me, yes me, to call johnson to see if they could give me any guidance. the only difference between the motor then and now is im out another $850.
the motor will run strong for the first run in the morning. when i stop for a bit and go to start it again, it will start, but the minute i put it in gear, it stalls. it will keep doing this until i put it in neutral and slowly give it gas and "rev" the motor up. it almost seems like it is choking itself out. i put gas treatment in all the time. it will only do it in the water, it doesn't seem to stall in a tank.
any help from anyone or any ideas would be greatly appreciated. i can't sink anymore money for dealers to guess at what it is and have it not work. thanks guys!

does this happen worse on hot days? please post year and model of motor... I had a similar problem with my fastrike 150...
I never really got to the bottom of the problem... closest thing I heard about was something called "heat soak" don't quote me on that term... something to do with air/and or gas becoming too hot in the carbs... sounds crazy but I read a bit about it and it made sense after I thought about it... I had the problem more on hot summer days... check the Evinrude/johnson board at bassboat central... I've read quite a few descriptions of this problem...
hope that helps... I'll keep my eyes open...

the motor is a 2005 johnson j150glso hp. honestly, i don't notice it more when it is really hot. it does it all the time. the alarm only went off from when i had the new filter put in until i got the new fuel pump.
thanks again.

Raz, I would look into the heat soak deal... do a search at BBC... Also your idle speed may be set too low... Since your out of warranty, and dealers are well... get a manual for your motor... I'm going now to check out some stuff for ya... be back...

i talked to a tech from brp today. they said it is vapor lock and gave me some ideas on how to trouble shoot and correct the problem. i'm going to try the non-dealer issues first that they said to try, and if that doesn't work i will bring it in again for the mechanical things. i have to say, it was nice to explain it to someone and have them actually have an idea about what it was. thanks for all your help, i appreciate it.
