Tournament Trail January 24, 2008 The Bogalusa Bass Club held their first tournament of the 2008 season on the Pearl River. Due to the low water conditions, club members voted to launch at Poole's Bluff or Richardson's Landings to avoid the impassable log jamb.Saturday morning arrived to three-two man teams launching at each launch. Weather conditions were unfavorable for the twelve guys who fished. The water and air temperature of the 9.6 feet and rising Pearl River never reached the upper 40's. Mix the temps, with the light rain and 6-12 mph north winds, and there was a perfect mixture for some great things, bass fishing was not one of them. Remarkably the three winning teams all launched at the Richardson boat landing, leaving those at Poole's Bluff to catching short fish and struggling to even get a bite. Toby Cooper and Brandon Sheridan fished hard with jigs and spinner baits to catch 5 fish and weighed in 7lbs 11oz. Precision casting and a little know-how earned this team 3rd place on the river oxbows. BASS Tournament angler and Skeeter team member Ricky Kennedy, and Brandon Applewhite earned their 2nd place finish by slowly dragging jigs through submerged cover in 6-8 feet of water. The team weighed in 9lbs 3oz with 4 fish, including Applewhite's 4lbs 3oz whopper that narrowly took the big bass pot away form the 1st place team of Steve Owens and Jason Nelson. Their honey hole produced 6 fish and gave the pair a total of 13lbs 3oz. Owen's fish and others fell for a jig in 10-15 feet of water. Congratulations to all the winners. The second stop for the Bogalusa Bass Club was back to the Pearl River for a doubles angler's choice tournament. The participating 13 anglers could launch at any public boat launch on the Pearl River system and meet at Poole's Bluff for the weigh-in. Teams were drawn at our commitment meeting with a last minute entry bringing the total of boats to seven. Local weather people forecasted a cloudy Saturday with highs in the low 70's and a 20% chance of rain. That could have been a great forecast for a tournament when spawn is approaching and the river is in the mid 13 foot range. Unfortunately, heavy rain net the anglers at safe light and lasted until almost one o'clock. Temperatures barely broke 60 for most of the day, and the muddy water cooled to the mid 50's. Both fisherman and the fish were left not knowing what was going on, or how to handle the situation. Third place winners Brandon Applewhite and Shawn Robbins suited up with the rain slicks and hauled in a combined weight of 9lbs 3oz with five fish that fell for an assortment of lure choices. Last minute entry Joey Crawford, has an amazing day on the canal where he culled fish before mid morning. His skills on the water earned him a five fish limit and second place finish without a partner. He also deserves a little pat on the back for showing some of the other veteran anglers that sometimes it pays to fish the canal. Chris Polk started his year off right when he and partner Brandon Sheridan headed up the Pearl in search of mammoth bucket mouths. The pair did just that, six fish and 14lbs 7oz later, the duo ended the day with a well deserved first place finish and Big Bass. Polk hooked the goliath largemouth and needed a little assistance for Sheridan to get it in the boat. The Bogalusa Bass Club congratulates all the winners in the February tournament.
